As the area rebuilt its economy after the end of Japanese occupation in 1945, demand for fine Malayan tea was so high that local chai sellers could no longer afford to buy the high-grade leaves from the nearby plantations. They turned to sarabat, the lowest quality dust and fragments left over from processing, which was much more affordable but had an astringent taste.
